The shame of the metros!

So I am a radio person, I love the fact that you can listen to the radio and do something else *multitask*. When was listening to Metro FM today, it hit me that I should discuss the Metro FM Music Awards.

The Metro FM radio station annually hosts the Metro FM Music Awards (MMAS) to honour local artists, who’ve contributed significantly to the local music industry in the preceding year. The 12th MMAS took place at the International Conference Centre (ICC) in Durban on Saturday 23 February, 2013. They were hosted by Robert Marawa and Azania Mosaka.

There were a lot of scandals associated with the event this year, from kwaito star Mkhonzeni “professor” Langa who was fined R3000 or one month in prison, for wearing a metro police uniform to the awards. Guess he has never had of the saying “don’t try too hard”, was catchy though must say. It went with the theme of his song, lol admit it! *oops* forgot I am not here to gossip. I analyse events.

So the disaster in the planning of this occasion was that the tickets were duplicated. Yes DUPLICATED. You spend a lot of money purchasing a ticket to be part of the event, and then when you get to the door they give you a funny look (YOU CRIMINAL!), thinking aaah but you already here *smh*. With everyone having a double there wasn’t enough space for everyone, because they couldn’t tell who was fake or the real makhoya. As if that wasn’t enough, you get to the hotel at the ICC to find it’s over booked. So you on standby, lol really????? That time you have paid.

I can only imagine the damage control the PRP of the organisation had to do. I wouldn’t have wanted to be in her shoes. The public wasn’t happy, not to mention the bad publicity they got. This scandal would affect any organisation negatively; this was unprofessional and inefficient planning. My crisis plan and guidelines to the PRP would be as follows:

1.       Putting the public’s interest first
2.       Take responsibility for correcting the situation
3.       Respond to all media inquires
4.       Have a designated spokesperson
5.       Have a press conference

  1. enough said indeed but lets say you were the event organiser for METRO FM and people started fighting to get in were you going to chase them out or let them in considering you dont know who's the fake and who's not?

    1. the venue could only accommodate a certain number of people hence was not an open event, people needed tickets to enter. The sooner you bought your ticket, you could secure your space. Now the issue here is that they kept letting people in till the venue was packed and other people didnt have space. what if i was the real makhoya stuck outside? is it my fault that their tickets could be duplicated? they should have made other arrangements for them.with scams of people duplicating tickets in ourdays they should have done the new identification number on tickets thing and people produce their IDs to enter. But hey thats my opinion

    1. following my guidelines i would have 1,recognised that i was wrong. Its not the peoples fault that their tickets were duplicated, so why not make arrangements for them? lets book them in a hotel somewhere, where they can watch the metros comfortably, while we promise to investigatethe matter futher. This gives the public comfort that we are at least sorry about what happened. we have a media confrence to address the issue and have a public apology to all the people who were affected by this unfortunate circumstance

  3. Proper planning is such an important thing and having contingency plans too then I think there will be less disasters. Besides that I enjoyed watching the Metros on tv plus Metro fm is the best radio station ever!!

  4. I think the issue of ticket duplication is soo last century, i mean it happens all the time and all we get is "the investigation is going on" don't they ever conclude and maybe arrest themselves if they can't get the crooks(that's if they are not responsible themselves)? mxxm!

  5. I love metro FM especially the Urban beat on Fridays :-), one thing we should bare in mind is that certain crisis in big events do occur. Clearly it shows it wasn’t a proper planned and well secured event. I think the feedback they got from the public was a wake-up call that certain mistakes should be avoided.

  6. we cannot predict the future Abo you can plan a successfuly and head for a disaster event..it is always wise to plan for a crisis in advance

  8. Yoh it clearly means that the PRP either doesn't care or they don't know what they are doing. How could so many things go wrong in one night...wait do they even have a PRP???
